Warehouse Supervisor – Purpose of the Role

The Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for managing and controlling end-to-end picking operations and inventory control within the warehouse. This role supervises both permanent and outsourced picking teams, ensuring consistent adherence to processes, achievement of productivity targets, and accurate, on-time order fulfilment. The position drives operational discipline, efficiency, system-driven picking, and compliance with safety and quality standards while supporting the broader warehouse team to deliver a reliable and cost-effective service.

Key Responsibilities

Operations

  • Supervise, guide, and support permanent and outsourced picking teams
  • Maintain a disciplined, controlled, and efficient working environment
  • Conduct daily check-ins with staff to review progress, productivity, and operational challenges
  • Ensure all picking activities comply with approved processes and warehouse standards
  • Confirm system-driven picking and correct stock selection from designated bays
  • Perform random accuracy checks to ensure correct items and quantities are picked
  • Monitor picking output to ensure productivity targets are consistently met
  • Coordinate with warehouse planners to align picking activities with dispatch schedules
  • Ensure timely completion of picking to prevent delays, additional transport costs, and service disruptions
  • Monitor picking equipment to ensure availability and proper functionality
  • Ensure all administrative procedures within the picking area are accurately followed
  • Report daily on productivity, accuracy, delays, and operational challenges
  • Maintain accurate records of staff performance and process deviations

Warehouse Supervision

  • Lead, train, and motivate picking teams to achieve performance targets
  • Enforce company policies, health and safety standards, and disciplinary procedures
  • Conduct regular team meetings and toolbox talks to drive continuous improvement

Reporting & Documentation

  • Compile daily and weekly reports on productivity, accuracy, and inventory performance
  • Track key performance indicators, including order accuracy, picking timelines, and stock variances
  • Maintain documentation required for internal and external audits

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions where required
  • Maintain a safe, organised, and hazard-free working environment

Housekeeping

  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and safety throughout the warehouse
  • Ensure aisles, picking areas, and storage zones remain free of obstructions and hazards
  • Implement and enforce daily housekeeping schedules
  • Monitor hygiene, waste disposal, and packaging material management
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify and address cleanliness and safety risks
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and PPE are correctly stored and in good condition

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field preferred
  • Proven picking experience within a warehouse environment
  • Previous supervisory or team leader experience

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong supervisory and people management skills
  • Working knowledge of WMS, Microsoft Office, and inventory control practices
  • Good literacy and numerical ability
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • System-driven and process-focused mindset
