Purpose of the Role
The Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for managing and controlling the end-to-end picking process and inventory control within the warehouse. The role oversees both permanent and outsourced picking staff to ensure that all operational processes are followed, productivity targets are achieved, and customer orders are picked accurately and on time. The Warehouse Supervisor plays a key role in maintaining discipline, improving operational efficiency, supporting system-driven picking, and ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards while contributing to reliable and cost-effective warehouse operations.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
• Supervise, guide, and support both permanent and outsourced picking staff
• Maintain a disciplined, controlled, and productive working environment
• Conduct daily check-ins with staff to review progress, productivity, and operational challenges
• Ensure all picking activities follow established warehouse processes and standards
• Confirm that pickers follow system-driven picking procedures and select stock from the correct storage bays
• Perform random accuracy checks to verify correct items and quantities
• Monitor picking performance to ensure productivity targets are consistently achieved
• Work closely with warehouse planners to align picking activities with dispatch schedules
• Ensure orders are picked on time to prevent delivery delays, extra transport costs, and customer service issues
• Monitor equipment such as pallet jacks and handheld scanners to ensure they remain in good working condition
• Ensure all administrative processes in the picking area are properly followed
• Provide daily updates on productivity levels, progress, delays, operational challenges, and accuracy rates
• Maintain accurate records of staff performance and any deviations from standard procedures
Warehouse Supervision
• Lead, train, and motivate the picking team to maintain high performance levels
• Enforce company policies, health and safety regulations, and disciplinary procedures
• Conduct regular team meetings and toolbox talks to communicate updates and encourage continuous improvement
Reporting and Documentation
• Prepare daily and weekly reports covering productivity, picking accuracy, and inventory status
• Monitor key performance indicators such as order accuracy, picking turnaround times, and stock discrepancies
• Maintain documentation required for internal and external audit compliance
Health and Safety Compliance
• Ensure strict adherence to occupational health and safety standards
• Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions when necessary
• Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organised warehouse environment
Housekeeping
• Ensure the warehouse remains clean, organised, and safe at all times
• Keep aisles, picking zones, and storage areas free from obstructions and hazards
• Implement and monitor daily housekeeping responsibilities for staff
• Ensure proper disposal of waste and packaging materials according to hygiene and safety standards
• Conduct routine inspections to identify and resolve cleanliness or safety risks
• Ensure tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment are stored properly and maintained in good condition
Minimum Requirements
• Grade 12 (Matric)
• Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field will be advantageous
• Experience in warehouse picking operations
• Previous supervisory or team leader experience
Skills and Competencies
• Strong leadership and people management abilities
• Knowledge of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Microsoft Office, and inventory control practices
• Good literacy and numerical skills
• Strong planning and organisational capabilities
• System-driven and process-focused approach to work
