The UTILITIES CONTROLLER provides multidisciplinary engineering and operational expertise to ensure all utilities maintenance activities are executed according to prescribed procedures and timelines. This role is critical in achieving maximum equipment availability, operational reliability, and continuous improvement within the utilities environment.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Utilities Maintenance and Operations

  • Manage all utilities maintenance activities and lead day-shift maintenance teams
  • Diagnose, interpret, and resolve technical faults to optimize plant performance
  • Reduce breakdowns through effective analysis, compliance with preventative maintenance requirements, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Review, implement, and manage planned maintenance procedures, including daily, weekly, and monthly checklists
  • Execute breakdown, preventative, and predictive maintenance in line with service level agreements

Asset Care and Performance Management

  • Support and execute the department’s asset care strategy to maintain utilities equipment performance
  • Identify major engineering losses within the utilities area and investigate using structured problem-solving tools
  • Review emergency work orders and initiate corrective and preventative actions
  • Ensure engineering standards are applied consistently across all utilities operations

People Leadership and Capability Development

  • Coach and develop the engineering capabilities of maintenance and operational teams
  • Develop and deliver training using OPLs and SOPs
  • Set, manage, and monitor Level 1 and Level 2 team goals within the utilities area
  • Conduct individual and team performance reviews, one-on-one sessions, and provide continuous performance feedback
  • Lead cross-functional teams to deliver business and operational objectives

Cost, Compliance, and Governance

  • Control and monitor maintenance costs against approved budgets
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant acts, procedures, and special work permit requirements for employees and contractors
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and 5S practices
  • Ensure accurate reporting, investigation, documentation, and closure of incidents
  • Promote safety awareness and safe work practices at all times
  • Apply and sustain industrial relations initiatives, policies, agreements, and company core values

VPO and Quality Standards

  • Lead and drive all VPO initiatives within the utilities department
  • Ensure adherence to company quality standards across all utilities operations

Minimum Requirements

  • National Diploma or N6 in Mechanical Engineering with a Trade Test
  • Knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, and Instrumentation systems
  • Experience with ammonia and refrigeration systems, boilers, and air compressors is advantageous
  • Maintenance Diploma is an added advantage
  • Three to five years’ experience in preventive and predictive maintenance within a production or manufacturing environment
