Utilities Controller – SAB Vacancies

Job Purpose
The Utilities Controller provides multidisciplinary engineering and operations expertise to ensure the maintenance of utilities equipment is executed efficiently, safely, and within prescribed procedures. The role aims to maximize equipment availability, reduce downtime, and optimize operational performance.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Manage all utilities maintenance activities and lead a day-shift team
  • Diagnose and interpret faults to optimize production output and coordinate plant repairs
  • Reduce breakdowns by analysing root causes, complying with planned maintenance (PM) requirements, and implementing continuous improvements
  • Review and implement Planned Maintenance Procedures, including daily, weekly, and monthly checklists
  • Maintain service level agreements by executing breakdown, preventive, and predictive maintenance effectively
  • Participate in the department’s asset care strategy to sustain utilities machine performance
  • Coach and develop engineering skills of maintenance and operational staff
  • Monitor and control maintenance costs within budget
  • Ensure engineering standards and procedures are correctly applied
  • Lead fault-finding and problem-solving initiatives, guiding the team in using structured methodologies such as the 4 phases of problem solving, 5 Whys, and Stage 1 investigations
  • Identify major engineering losses, investigate causes, and implement corrective actions
  • Review emergency work orders and initiate investigations
  • Develop and lead cross-functional teams to meet business objectives
  • Ensure compliance with legislative acts, company procedures, and special work permit requirements
  • Maintain 5S and housekeeping standards within the utilities area
  • Oversee incident reporting, investigation, documentation, and corrective actions
  • Promote safety awareness and ensure adherence to all safety protocols
  • Manage Level 1 & 2 team goals, conduct performance reviews, and provide feedback
  • Lead departmental Value Proposition Opportunities (VPO) initiatives
  • Apply and uphold industrial relations policies, procedures, agreements, and core company values
  • Ensure compliance with company quality standards in the utilities area

Minimum Requirements

  • National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or N6 Mechanical Engineering with Trade Test
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems
  • Applied experience with ammonia/refrigeration systems, boilers, and air compressors preferred
  • Maintenance Diploma advantageous
  • 3–5 years’ experience in preventive and predictive maintenance of production plant machinery, including daily inspections, maintenance, and repair
