Skipper

Sea Harvest vacancies are seeking an experienced Skipper to join the fleet operating out of Saldanha Bay on the West Coast. This role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a fishing vessel, leading the crew, managing fishing activities, and navigating to optimal fishing grounds while ensuring full compliance with maritime and fishing regulations.

Role Purpose

• Oversee the operation and navigation of the fishing vessel
• Ensure the safety, wellbeing, and discipline of the crew
• Manage fishing activities to achieve operational and production targets

Key Performance Areas

Safety and Legal Compliance

• Ensure full compliance with safe manning requirements and all SAMSA, Maritime OSH, and Class regulations
• Adhere to company watch-keeping procedures
• Ensure compliance with fishing regulations and permit conditions

Vessel Operations and Equipment Maintenance

• Ensure all vessel machinery and equipment are properly maintained and fully operational
• Support continuous, safe, and effective vessel operations

Fishing Performance

• Oversee the care and maintenance of fishing gear and equipment
• Apply due care when operating in hazardous fishing grounds
• Achieve defined fishing and production targets

Quality and Cost Control

• Maintain required quality standards at all times
• Ensure vessel operations remain within allocated budgets

Crew Management and Skills Development

• Maintain discipline and promote a positive working environment
• Encourage teamwork and effective communication on board
• Support the transfer and development of skills among officers and crew

Qualifications and Competencies

• Fisherman Grade 2 or Skipper Fishing greater than 24m (Limited Waters)
• Valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (unrestricted)
• Valid STCW certification
• Proven experience in Hake Bottom Trawling operations
• Previous experience as a Freezer Trawler Skipper
• Strong personnel management and safety awareness
• Fluent in English, both written and spoken
• Ability to follow company procedures and instructions
• Strong leadership and motivational ability
