Job Summary

An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Quantity Surveyor within the Project Controls Department, reporting to the Senior Manager: Project Controls. The successful candidate will provide professional quantity surveying and cost engineering services across projects within the Capital Projects and Compliance Division, ensuring effective cost management, contractual compliance, and financial control throughout the project lifecycle.

Minimum Requirements

• Formal qualification (BTech or B Degree) in Quantity Surveying or Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Water or related field).
• Minimum 10 years’ extensive experience in engineering projects, cost estimating, project progress evaluation, and valuation, or equivalent Quantity Surveying/Cost Engineering experience within the engineering sector.
• At least 5 years’ experience in Project Management, with demonstrated expertise in project scheduling and managing multi-disciplinary projects within matrix structures.
• Professional registration, or eligibility for registration, with the South African Council of Quantity Surveyors (SACQS) or the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
• Project Management qualification (Diploma or Degree) will be advantageous.
• Computer literacy with proficiency in SAP Project System, MS Office (advanced Excel), MS Project, and WinQS.
• Strong leadership, communication, influencing, and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to deliver results without direct line authority.
• Solid knowledge of project estimating and enterprise project management systems.

Primary Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive quantity surveying services, including cost estimating, cost control, tender management, and post-contract commercial administration.
• Lead the preparation and measurement of construction works prior to tender submission.
• Participate in tender clarification, evaluation, and financial assessment processes.
• Manage contracts post-award through accurate monthly cost reporting, variation control, and claims assessment.
• Conduct financial evaluation during tender adjudication processes.
• Review industry cost trends, escalation factors, and engineering market developments.
• Verify and value contract claims, variations, and penalty calculations.
• Perform monthly site measurements and prepare accurate payment certificates.
• Prepare detailed estimates at all project stages, ensuring cost accuracy and compliance.

Knowledge Requirements

• Advanced cost estimating methodologies.
• Understanding of CIDB regulations and Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) principles.
• Knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems.
• Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSACT).
• Awareness of relevant water sector legislation.
• Working knowledge of FIDIC suite of contracts.
