Paralegal
Anova Vacancies are seeking a skilled Paralegal to provide legal and strategic support to Human Rights Ambassadors/Reactors, strengthen community-based human rights interventions, and ensure effective case management and referral systems. The Paralegal will review human rights violation cases, provide guidance on next steps, escalate complex matters to NACOSA Legal Officers, and facilitate capacity-building and advocacy initiatives at the district level.
Key Responsibilities
Human Rights Advocacy and Networking
- Develop and implement quarterly advocacy plans for the district
- Advocate for the rights of adolescent girls, young women, and key vulnerable populations
- Apply harm reduction principles in all advocacy work
- Engage with communities, district stakeholders, and relevant government departments (e.g., clinics, SAPS, DSD)
- Identify service gaps and strategize with the programme team to address them
- Build and maintain relationships with legal aid organisations, social workers, SAPS units, and other service providers
- Represent the programme with integrity in all district-level meetings and forums
Sensitisation and Training
- Identify and engage stakeholders for sensitisation workshops
- Conduct quarterly sensitisation workshops in the district
- Build capacity within the key population network
Legal Information, Advice, and Referral
- Support the collection and monitoring of human rights violation cases
- Assist community members with drafting affidavits, statements, and complaints
- Provide advice on legal remedies or next steps within the paralegal’s scope of competence
- Facilitate referrals to Legal Aid South Africa, Human Rights Commission, Department of Justice, shelters, and psychosocial or health support services
- Follow up with clients and service providers to ensure cases are addressed
- Escalate complex cases to NACOSA Legal Officers for further intervention
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Response
- Provide trauma containment counselling where necessary
- Ensure survivors receive immediate care, including medical support and Thuthuzela Care Centre referral within 72 hours of sexual assault
- Support survivors in opening cases at SAPS and provide court support where required
- Assist in safety planning and placement of survivors in safe spaces
Human Rights Ambassador/Reactor Support and Supervision
- Ensure quality control of all case documentation by Ambassadors/Reactors
- Train Ambassadors/Reactors on SOPs and data tools for human rights violations
- Assess cases for accuracy, completeness, and correct categorisation
- Provide ongoing technical support to ensure proper case follow-up and closure
Qualifications and Experience
- Certificate or Diploma in Paralegal Studies, Human Rights, or related legal/social justice field
- Accredited community paralegal training or recognised courses in human rights, legal rights awareness, or access to justice (preferred)
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in advocacy, human rights, or programming in public health/HIV
- Experience conducting trainings and workshops
