Purpose of the Job
Value Logistics is looking for an experienced Panelbeater responsible for repairing and restoring the bodywork of heavy-duty trucks damaged through accidents, wear and tear, or other incidents. The role requires strong skills in metalwork, welding, and finishing to ensure the structural integrity and appearance of vehicles are restored to the highest standards.
Key Responsibilities
Damage Assessment and Parts Coordination
- Review job cards or quotations to determine the scope of work required
- Inspect damaged trucks to assess structural, body, mechanical, or interior damage
- Support the Estimator by providing input on repair timeframes and costs
- Evaluate the vehicle against the job card to identify required replacement parts
- Identify and report any additional damage discovered during inspection
- Order required parts and follow up to ensure timely delivery
- Verify that ordered parts are correct and free from defects
- Fabricate replacement parts when original components are unavailable or too costly
- Ensure all components requiring painting are sent to the paint shop with the vehicle
Repair and Assembly Quality
- Carefully dismantle damaged sections of the truck to access affected areas
- Reassemble components ensuring proper alignment and functionality
- Straighten and reshape damaged panels and frames using tools such as hammers, dollies, and hydraulic presses
- Cut and weld replacement panels or frames when necessary
- Repair or replace damaged components including fenders, doors, bumpers, and other body parts
- Ensure correct panel alignment and proper fitment of all parts
- Perform MIG, TIG, or oxy-acetylene welding to securely join metal components
- Sand, grind, and smooth repaired surfaces to achieve a high-quality finish
- Apply primers, paints, and protective coatings where required
- Inspect completed repairs to ensure they meet quality standards
- Conduct a final roadworthiness inspection
Team Coordination and Professional Conduct
- Perform quality checks on the assistant’s work
- Guide, support, and train assistants where necessary
- Coordinate with the Foreman, Estimator, Manager, and CPD to maintain efficient workflow
- Maintain and calibrate panel beating tools and equipment regularly
- Ensure productivity and efficiency standards are consistently met
- Provide assistance in other workshop operations when required
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Qualified Panel Beater with Trade Test and Red Seal Certification
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in panel beating, preferably working with heavy-duty trucks
Skills Requirements
- Strong expertise in metalwork, welding, and fabrication
- Proficiency in the use of panel beating tools and workshop equipment
- Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
- Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and repair manuals
- Physical strength and endurance to handle heavy materials and equipment
- Excellent attention to detail for accurate and high-quality repairs
- Ability to assess vehicle damage and determine appropriate repair methods
- Creativity in fabricating parts or implementing alternative repair solutions
- Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues
