The PACKAGING MAINTENANCE CONTROLLER is responsible for coordinating, coaching, and controlling Level One maintenance teams within the production environment. The role provides specialist technical guidance to ensure maximum equipment availability, sustainable maintenance practices, and continuous operational improvement.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Maintenance and Equipment Reliability
- Ensure packaging machines are maintained at optimal efficiency and availability
- Drive sustainable and effective breakdown repairs to prevent re-occurrence
- Lead the resolution of major downtime events with a focus on root cause and loop closure
- Manage maintenance activities during planned maintenance days
- Oversee a team of artisans to ensure consistent equipment reliability
Technical Support and Problem Solving
- Provide specialist technical support to maintenance teams
- Apply structured problem-solving methods to resolve operational issues
- Participate as a functional expert in PDCA, ITF, and related improvement initiatives
- Escalate complex issues to Maintenance Planners or Engineers when required
People Leadership and Development
- Coach, develop, and manage performance of maintenance team members
- Set and monitor team goals and provide individual coaching where needed
- Delegate tasks effectively and empower team members to deliver high standards
- Assess and support the development of potential candidates
Continuous Improvement and Audits
- Lead and support continuous improvement projects
- Conduct regular maintenance audits and implement corrective actions
- Promote best practices aligned with VPO Maintenance and Management principles
Safety, Housekeeping, and Compliance
- Ensure a safe working environment and enforce safe work practices at all times
- Identify and address unsafe conditions and behaviors
- Ensure compliance with SAB policies, procedures, and work instructions
- Apply housekeeping and 5S principles consistently during all maintenance activities
Minimum Requirements
- National Diploma or N6 qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, or Control and Automation
- Qualified Millwright, Mechanical, or Fitter Trade
- Minimum of four years’ FMCG maintenance experience, preferably with supervisory exposure
- Strong mechanical knowledge with solid understanding of electrical and instrumentation systems
- PC literacy, including Microsoft Office and SAP
- Knowledge of VPO Maintenance and Management Pillars is advantageous
- Demonstrated understanding of VPO Safety Pillar standards and procedures
