About the Role
The Manager Fruit & Veg is responsible for leading and managing the Fresh Produce department, ensuring exceptional product quality, availability, and presentation while achieving strong sales, gross margin, and controlled shrinkage. This role drives operational excellence through effective stock management, team leadership, and adherence to merchandising and food safety standards, delivering a superior customer experience with fresh, high-quality produce.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (essential)
- 3–5 years’ experience in a Fresh Produce retail environment with supervisory or management responsibility
- Strong knowledge of fresh produce handling, merchandising, and stock management
- Experience managing shrinkage, waste control, and stock rotation
- Understanding of food safety and hygiene standards

Key Responsibilities
Department Management and Commercial Performance
- Drive sales and profitability of the Fresh Produce department through effective stock management and merchandising
- Ensure all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are implemented and adhered to, supporting operational consistency and efficiency
- Monitor daily sales performance and take action to achieve departmental targets
- Manage pricing, promotions, and product mix to optimise sales and margin
- Maintain high product availability while controlling stock levels
Product Quality and Freshness
- Ensure all fresh produce meets company quality and freshness standards
- Implement strict stock rotation (FIFO) to maximise shelf life and minimise shrinkage
- Regularly inspect product quality and remove damaged stock
- Ensure correct handling and storage procedures to maintain product integrity
Customer Experience and Merchandising
- Maintain visually appealing, well-stocked, and organised produce displays
- Adhere to planograms, display standards, and seasonal merchandising guidelines
- Promote seasonal and promotional products through effective displays
- Deliver excellent customer service through product knowledge and engagement
Stock Management and Waste Control
- Manage ordering and replenishment processes to maintain optimal stock levels
- Monitor stock movement, shrinkage, and waste, implementing corrective actions where required
- Conduct regular stock counts to ensure accurate inventory control
- Work closely with receiving teams to ensure correct product quality and quantities
Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop the Fresh Produce team to achieve operational excellence
- Manage staff scheduling to ensure adequate departmental coverage
- Train team members on product handling, merchandising standards, and food safety
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and high performance
Compliance and Food Safety
- Ensure full compliance with food safety, hygiene, and health regulations
- Maintain clean, organised, and safe working areas
- Ensure all staff adhere to company policies and food handling standards
