Manager Deli – Pick n Pay Careers

Job Purpose

  • Manage deli resources to maximise turnover and minimise shortages.
  • Ensure compliance with all standards, processes, and company policies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric / Grade 12
  • 2–3 years’ experience in a deli or retail food environment
  • 1–2 years’ supervisory experience
  • Experience with retail systems and reporting tools (e.g., SAP or similar)
  • Proven ability to analyse data and identify root causes of stock variances
  • Computer literate

Key Responsibilities

Merchandising Management

  • Conduct regular quality checks on deli merchandise
  • Execute planograms 100% in line with standards
  • Handle products according to SOPs
  • Ensure products are produced to recipe specifications
  • Prepare the department for trade by store opening time
  • Identify fast-selling lines and assess implications for margin and sales opportunities
  • Ensure products are wrapped and packed according to standards
  • Maintain sufficient stock to meet customer demand
  • Ensure hygiene, housekeeping, and safe working standards are upheld
  • Monitor promotional activities in line with the promotional calendar
  • Keep back-up areas clean and organised
  • Rotate stock and manage sell-by dates on sales floor and back-up areas
  • Maintain merchandising and cleanliness standards throughout the trading day while minimising waste

Food Safety & Hygiene

  • Maintain hygiene and housekeeping standards at all times
  • Ensure stock rotation is applied consistently
  • Monitor compliance with food safety and health & safety requirements
  • Manage non-conformances with effective corrective action
  • Implement cleaning schedules and verify sanitation effectiveness
  • Record Food Safety Daily Checklist

Customer Service Management

  • Respond to customer requests professionally
  • Manage out-of-stock queries, offer alternatives, and explain delivery timelines
  • Ensure department equipment is operational and manned at all times

Staff Management

  • Communicate priorities, targets, and critical operational updates to staff
  • Set targets, delegate tasks, and monitor execution
  • Address procedural, policy, and legislative non-compliance
  • Attend monthly regional meetings and cascade key information to staff
  • Review and adjust Kronos scheduling
  • Coach and develop team members

Administration & Performance Management

  • Ensure all equipment is maintained and functional
  • Maintain general maintenance standards
  • Monitor waste and ensure procedures are followed
  • Track turnover, identify opportunities to increase sales, and address barriers to achieving budgets
  • Ensure all Shelf Edge Labels (SELs) are current, printed, and legible

Systems & Reporting

  • Conduct gap scanning for out-of-stocks
  • Identify, count, and record out-of-stocks and overstock
  • Generate reports from SAP and communicate stock concerns to Demand Planning
  • Process IDTs, reduced-to-clear, and waste in line with SOP
  • Monitor electronic communications regularly throughout the working day
  • Ensure PIDs are counted correctly according to the National P&L schedule
