Role Overview – Distribution Supervisor
The Distribution Supervisor supports the efficient execution of distribution operations by overseeing delivery teams, optimizing routing and scheduling, and ensuring timely and accurate deliveries. This role plays a key part in maintaining service excellence, operational efficiency, and compliance across the distribution function.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and support Delivery Drivers and Assistants to ensure on-time and accurate customer deliveries
- Optimize secondary distribution through effective routing and scheduling of vehicles
- Oversee end-to-end distribution center operations, including loading, dispatch, delivery, and post-delivery processes
- Manage debriefing, invoicing, credit notes, and claims processing activities
- Monitor and analyze KPIs, identify deviations, and implement corrective actions
- Ensure proper use, maintenance, and functionality of operational equipment
- Maintain safe working conditions and compliance with health and safety standards
- Manage system integrity, data accuracy, and security in distribution processes
- Support cost management initiatives across plant, distribution, and supply chain operations
- Ensure accurate execution of delivery plans for key accounts
- Monitor Proof of Delivery (POD) processes and eliminate outstanding documentation
- Track and analyze daily delivery performance data
Operational Excellence and Cost Management
- Manage pallet control and prevent unnecessary write-offs
- Control overtime through effective workforce planning
- Coordinate vehicle servicing with fleet teams to ensure availability and reliability
- Ensure adherence to loading procedures and warehouse standards
- Maintain strong industrial relations and team discipline
- Drive productivity improvements and meet operational targets
Service Delivery
- Achieve at least 95% service level (fill rate) and on-time delivery performance
- Communicate delivery delays proactively to customers and stakeholders
- Monitor daily dispatch timelines and report departures accordingly
- Track order fulfillment performance and conduct regular analysis
Quality and Compliance
- Ensure proper stock rotation to minimize expiries and losses
- Maintain high inventory accuracy standards
- Conduct daily inventory checks and report on stock health
- Enforce housekeeping, hygiene, and food safety standards
- Manage and resolve non-conformance issues effectively
People Management
- Manage team performance and implement corrective actions where necessary
- Identify training and development needs for warehouse and distribution staff
- Plan and manage employee shifts effectively
- Oversee contract labor usage in line with approved guidelines
- Maintain discipline and ensure adherence to operational standards
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
- Diploma or qualification in Supply Chain, Logistics, or related field is advantageous
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an FMCG distribution environment
- Strong people management and leadership skills
- Good analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Customer-focused with a strong drive for results
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel for reporting and analysis
- Familiarity with warehouse management systems and inventory control tools
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in distribution environments
