Job Overview
The Distribution Manager is responsible for leading and managing the overall distribution operations to ensure efficient product delivery, optimal fleet utilization, and high levels of customer service. This role oversees the planning and execution of distribution activities including products, personnel, vehicles, routes, and customer deliveries. The Distribution Manager also focuses on cost optimization, operational performance, safety compliance, and the development of a high-performing distribution team.

Key Responsibilities

Distribution Planning and Operations

  • Plan and coordinate distribution activities including products, workforce, vehicles, routes, and customer deliveries.
  • Optimize fleet utilization to ensure efficient transportation and delivery performance.
  • Manage customer service delivery, including order fulfillment, product distribution, customer queries, and cash handling processes.
  • Oversee fleet management activities using DRM systems to ensure vehicles operate efficiently and safely.
  • Manage daily operational controls such as driver debriefing, route scheduling, delivery performance monitoring, and master data management within DRM.
  • Ensure optimal cost-to-serve by improving distribution efficiency and controlling operational expenses.
  • Monitor and manage On Time In Full (OTIF) delivery performance to maintain high service standards for customers.

Team and Resource Management

  • Manage manpower levels, including permanent staff and temporary employment services personnel.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the distribution team to support performance improvement and career development.
  • Foster a high-performance culture within the department through strong leadership and coaching.
  • Promote and embed TPW behaviors within the team to support operational excellence.
  • Ensure effective management of drivers, route controllers, and delivery assistants.

Operational Control and Asset Management

  • Manage driver shortages and oversee daily financial reconciliations related to deliveries.
  • Supervise distribution assets including vehicles, crates, pallets, forklifts, and weighing equipment.
  • Ensure proper management and control of distribution equipment and materials.
  • Oversee daily stock planning and manage buy-out requirements to support uninterrupted supply.

Safety and Compliance

  • Promote and enforce Environmental Health and Safety principles within the department.
  • Encourage a strong safety culture and ensure all distribution operations comply with safety standards and procedures.

Operational Scope

  • Oversee a large distribution network including route controllers, drivers, and delivery assistants.
  • Manage multiple distribution routes across different operational shifts including morning, afternoon, and weekend operations.
  • Ensure effective coordination and performance across all distribution routes.

Qualifications

  • National Diploma in Logistics Management or a related field.

Experience

  • 5–6 years of experience in a Distribution Manager or similar logistics leadership role.
  • Proven leadership and relationship-building abilities.
  • Strong people management and team development skills.
  • Experience in safety management within distribution or logistics environments.
  • Practical experience using DRM and VSC systems.
  • Experience managing crate control and distribution assets.
  • Experience in fleet management and vehicle operations.

  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Effective communication, influencing, and coaching skills.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with PowerPoint knowledge considered advantageous.
  • Understanding of manufacturing and logistics operations.
  • Knowledge of quality standards within manufacturing and distribution environments.
