Job Purpose
The Direct Entry Captain is responsible for the safe, secure, and efficient operation of the aircraft while ensuring full compliance with aviation regulations, company policies, SOPs, and the Operations Manual (OM). This role exercises full command authority and leads the flight crew to deliver operational excellence and a positive passenger experience.
Key Responsibilities
Flight Operations & Safety
- Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft across all flight phases.
- Exercise command authority in operational decision-making, including the ability to deny boarding or remove persons/cargo, with safety as the top priority.
- Conduct thorough pre-flight preparation, including aircraft inspections, weather analysis, route planning, and system checks.
- Pilot and navigate the aircraft during normal and non-normal operations, coordinating closely with ATC and crew.
- Monitor aircraft performance, mass and balance, refuelling, and legal documentation to maintain continuous airworthiness.
Crew Leadership & Communication
- Lead, coordinate, and support the flight crew, fostering teamwork, professionalism, and high morale.
- Communicate effectively with ATC, ground staff, dispatch, and passengers to ensure smooth operational flow.
- Mentor and guide crew members to develop their skills and maintain operational standards.
Operational Compliance & Efficiency
- Maintain technical proficiency and high flying standards to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
- Manage operational time pressures to achieve On-Time Performance (OTP) while prioritising safety.
- Represent the company with professionalism, upholding conduct, discipline, and appearance standards.
Job Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
- ATPL License (essential).
- Minimum 5000 hours TT and 2000 PIC >50T or 5000 hours TT and 1000 PIC on Boeing 737 or similar aircraft.
- Recent experience (within 24 months) as Pilot-in-Command on a large commercial airliner operating under Part 121 (e.g., Boeing 737 or equivalent).
- No medical conditions affecting performance as Captain.
- Willingness to work irregular hours.
- Willingness to sign an Upgrade Training Bond.
- Knowledge of Air Traffic Control procedures and airspace.
- Good understanding of South African CARS and CATS regulations.
- Familiarity with Doc 8168, FlySafair OM, and Boeing SOPs (Normal & Non-Normal procedures).
