Diesel Mechanic – Purpose of the Role

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing all maintenance, repair, and diagnostic work on commercial vehicles in accordance with Value job cards and manufacturer specifications. The role ensures vehicles are serviced efficiently, safely, and to a high standard, while maintaining professional conduct and adherence to health, safety, and housekeeping standards.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Maintenance & Repairs

• Conduct pre-diagnosis visual inspections and onboard diagnostics
• Review workshop job cards for accuracy and clarity before commencing work
• Ensure repair flat rates are adhered to
• Attend to both office-hour and after-hour breakdowns
• Complete job card sign-offs accurately
• Ensure all parts, including engine oils, are booked to the job card
• Prepare operating equipment and deliver necessary parts to the service bay
• Perform maintenance services in line with manufacturer specifications and maintenance schedules
• Conduct visual inspections, calibration, adjustments, and other technical procedures
• Identify deviations, unusual wear, and irregularities, reporting them to the Workshop Foreman
• Reset maintenance systems according to internal processes
• Inspect dismantled parts and return old or reconditioned parts to suppliers
• Replace worn or damaged parts with new or reconditioned components
• Document all repairs and parts usage accurately
• Compare vehicle condition with standard production configurations and evaluate technical status
• Perform final testing using measuring and diagnostic equipment to ensure roadworthiness and operational reliability

Operational & Professional Duties

• Maintain professional conduct at all times
• Assist with relevant operational tasks as required
• Comply with company dress code and Standard Operating Procedures
• Maintain daily housekeeping and cleanliness standards
• Ensure all health and safety standards are consistently followed

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 (Matric)
• Trade-tested Commercial Vehicle Diesel Technician

Skills & Competencies

• Ability to apply appropriate techniques and strategies to maintain a professional work area
• Capable of making basic inferences from customer vehicle usage patterns
• Knowledge of business principles relevant to the work environment
• Able to interact directly with customers regarding own work area
• Ability to identify hazards and follow direct instructions for safe handling
• Familiarity with basic health and safety procedures under supervision
