Purpose of the Role

The Diesel Mechanic will be responsible for performing comprehensive maintenance and repair services on commercial vehicles in accordance with Value Logistics job cards and company standards. The role ensures vehicles are serviced, repaired, and maintained to manufacturer specifications, delivering safe, reliable, and roadworthy fleet performance.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Inspection and Diagnosis

• Conduct visual inspections and on-board diagnostics during pre-diagnosis processes.
• Review workshop job cards to ensure accuracy and full understanding of required work.
• Compare vehicle condition with standard production configurations and assess technical status.
• Identify deviations, irregularities, and unusual wear, and report findings to the Workshop Foreman.

Maintenance and Repairs

• Perform maintenance services according to manufacturer specifications and scheduled maintenance plans.
• Execute repairs in line with approved flat-rate standards.
• Carry out calibration work, adjustments, and necessary technical interventions.
• Inspect dismantled components and replace with new or reconditioned parts where required.
• Reset maintenance systems according to internal procedures.

Breakdown Support

• Attend to office-hour and after-hours breakdowns promptly and professionally.

Quality Control and Compliance

• Perform final vehicle checks using appropriate testing and measuring equipment to ensure full repair completion and roadworthiness.
• Ensure all parts used, including consumables such as engine oils, are correctly booked to the job card.
• Prepare and document removed parts for return to suppliers when applicable.
• Complete job card sign-off accurately and maintain proper documentation of all work carried out.

Workshop Standards and Safety

• Prepare operating equipment and ensure all required parts are available at the service bay.
• Maintain daily housekeeping standards within the workshop environment.
• Adhere to Health and Safety regulations and company procedures at all times.
• Ensure professional conduct and compliance with company dress code and Standard Operating Procedures.
• Support operational activities as required.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 (Matric).
• Trade-tested Commercial Vehicle Diesel Technician qualification.

Skills and Competencies

• Ability to apply technical knowledge to maintain and repair commercial vehicles effectively.
• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to follow structured maintenance procedures and business principles within the work environment.
• Understanding of Health and Safety standards relevant to workshop operations.
• Ability to identify hazards under guidance and follow established safety protocols.
• Professional communication skills when dealing directly with customers and internal teams.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
