Job Description

The Senior Legal and Compliance Advisor will provide expert legal counsel and compliance oversight across commercial, fintech, and technology operations. This role ensures that Pepkor operates within the legal framework while mitigating risks, advising on legislative changes, and supporting corporate governance initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements.
• Provide legal advice and opinions on diverse matters affecting business operations.
• Advise on legislative enactments, amendments, and compliance requirements impacting fintech, payments, and technology.
• Maintain working knowledge of company, tax, consumer protection, information security, crypto, and AI-related legislation, including NCA, CPA, POPIA, and FICA.
• Facilitate dispute resolution and manage litigation processes.
• Support mergers, acquisitions, and corporate restructuring initiatives.
• Provide management and advice regarding trademarks, copyrights, and design rights.
• Draft, implement, and maintain policies and procedures to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, industry best practices, and corporate requirements.
• Monitor and communicate pending legal changes impacting the business.
• Maintain working knowledge of company secretarial procedures.

Minimum Requirements

• Undergraduate degree (BA, BAcc, BCom, or BSc).
• Post-graduate LLB.
• Additional post-graduate qualification in commerce or technology is advantageous.
• Completed articles at a top-tier law firm.
• Admitted attorney.
• 4–5 years’ post-qualification experience in legal, compliance, or finance roles.

Required Knowledge / Technical Skills

• Experience in fintech, IT, telecommunications, data protection, privacy, cybersecurity, AI, financial services, and software development.
• Proven experience in contract drafting and negotiation.
• Advisory experience with internal and external stakeholders.
