Job Description
The First Officer at FlySafair Careers supports the Captain in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of company aircraft. This role requires strong technical knowledge, situational awareness, and teamwork to uphold the highest standards of safety, operational performance, and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
- Ensure the safe and timely conduct of flights
- Monitor aircraft systems, performance, and flight path throughout all phases of flight
- Perform required checks and procedures before, during, and after each flight
- Operate and navigate the aircraft in compliance with regulations and company procedures
- Communicate effectively with internal departments, ATC, external service providers, and passengers
- Ensure compliance with SACAA regulations, company policies, SOPs, and the Operations Manual
- Uphold FlySafair’s customer service standards
- Complete accurate and legally compliant operational documentation
- Assume command of the aircraft in the event of Captain incapacitation
- Maintain current knowledge of SACAA, ICAO, and applicable international aviation regulations
- Assist the Captain with operational and administrative flight duties
- Support the Captain in maintaining high standards of crew discipline, professionalism, and appearance
- Execute assigned duties in line with FlySafair SOPs, aircraft limitations, and performance requirements
- Continuously verify safe navigation, terrain clearance, and adherence to the planned flight path
- Proactively provide advice and assistance to the Captain to support safe and efficient operations
- Represent the company with professionalism in conduct and appearance
- Support the Captain in maintaining high levels of crew competence and morale
Pre-Flight Responsibilities
- Maintain full awareness of the planned route, briefing documentation, weather conditions, and runway states at destination and alternate aerodromes
- Perform all pre-flight checks and complete required documentation in accordance with the Operations Manual
- Collaborate with the Captain on fuel planning, alternates, and assessment of operational restrictions
In-Flight Responsibilities
- Perform or monitor all normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures as specified in the Operations Manual
- Monitor flight parameters and procedures, cross-checking instruments and advising the Captain immediately of deviations, hazards, or abnormal indications
- Conduct radio communications as required
Post-Flight Responsibilities
- Complete all post-flight procedures in accordance with the Operations Manual and FCOM
- Submit all required reports and documentation, including IQSMS entries
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
- SACAA Commercial Pilot Licence (essential)
- Valid SACAA Class 1 Medical Certificate (essential)
- SACAA ATPL (preferred)
- Boeing aircraft type rating (advantageous)
- Experience on commercial jet aircraft over 20 tons (advantageous)
- Minimum of 1,500 total flight hours, including at least 500 hours multi-turbine time (essential)
- Multi-crew operational experience (essential)
- Medically fit with no conditions impacting operational duties
- Willingness to sign applicable training bonds
- No criminal record and willingness to undergo drug and alcohol testing
- Valid South African driver’s licence with own transport
- South African citizenship with valid identity document
- Valid South African passport
- Willingness to work irregular rostered hours
- Strong knowledge of SACAA, ICAO, and national aviation regulations
- Knowledge of ICAO Doc 8168 (essential)
- Knowledge of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licensing requirements
