Growth and Market Position

Boxer is one of the fastest-growing discount supermarket chains in Southern Africa. Guided by strong, people-centred values, we are positioned as Africa’s Favourite Discount Supermarket, serving the expanding middle- to lower-income consumer market. Since our beginnings in 1977 in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, the Boxer brand has grown steadily and now operates across South Africa and eSwatini.

Part of the Pick n Pay Group

In 2002, retail giant Pick n Pay acquired Boxer to better serve the value-focused consumer market in which Boxer continues to lead. Boxer actively partners with established brands to enhance accessibility for its customers. Supported by a long-standing and experienced Directorate and Executive team, Boxer operates with the efficiency and independence needed to succeed in a rapidly changing retail environment.

Retail Formats and Customer Focus

Boxer offers a range of retail formats, including full-service discount supermarkets, builders’ hardware stores, and liquor outlets. Boxer is not a cash-and-carry or a wholesaler, but a fully fledged retailer offering discounted products and services across all formats.

We serve a diverse customer base, from car-owning households to shoppers who rely on public transport. More than four decades of trading reflect Boxer’s forward-thinking approach and commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring our offerings consistently meet and exceed retail industry benchmarks.

Our Store Network

As of March 2024, Boxer operates 295 Superstores, 150 Liquor Stores, and 31 Build Stores across South Africa and eSwatini, bringing our total store footprint to 476 locations.
