Diesel Mechanic – Value Logistics

Purpose of the Job
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing all maintenance and repair work on commercial vehicles as per Value Logistics job cards, ensuring vehicles are safe, roadworthy, and meet operational standards. This role includes inspections, diagnostics, parts management, and adherence to manufacturer and company procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Maintenance and Repairs

• Conduct visual inspections and onboard diagnostics during pre-diagnosis
• Review workshop job cards for accuracy and understanding of required work
• Adhere to flat-rate repair guidelines
• Attend to both office-hour and after-hour vehicle breakdowns
• Ensure all parts, including consumables like engine oils, are correctly booked to the job card
• Prepare operating equipment and bring necessary parts to the service bay
• Perform maintenance services according to manufacturer specifications and maintenance schedules
• Conduct visual inspections, calibrations, adjustments, and other required work
• Identify deviations, unusual wear, or irregularities, and report to the Workshop Foreman
• Reset maintenance systems following internal processes
• Inspect dismantled parts, replace with new or reconditioned parts, and prepare returns to suppliers as required
• Document all work carried out and ensure proper handling of old/unusable parts
• Evaluate the vehicle’s technical condition against production configurations
• Perform final checks using testing and measuring equipment to ensure repairs are complete and vehicles are roadworthy

Professional Conduct and Operational Support

• Maintain professional conduct at all times
• Assist with operational functions as required
• Adhere to company dress code and Standard Operating Procedures
• Maintain daily housekeeping standards in the workshop
• Follow all Health and Safety procedures to ensure a safe working environment

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 (Matric)
• Trade-tested Commercial Vehicle Diesel Technician

Skills and Competencies

• Ability to use appropriate techniques and strategies to maintain a professional work environment
• Ability to interpret customer usage patterns and identify vehicle issues
• Understanding of business principles as they relate to own work environment
• Ability to interact directly with customers regarding own work area
• Competent in implementing company procedures and safety standards
• Awareness of hazards and ability to follow guidance for safe handling
• Knowledge of basic Health and Safety procedures relevant to workshop operations
