Category Buyer – Pick n Pay Careers

The Category Buyer is responsible for compiling and executing category plans aligned with business strategy, objectives, and category group guidelines. This role focuses on optimising category performance through strong commercial insight, customer-focused planning, and effective execution.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • 3–5 years’ retail and category management experience
  • Knowledge of General Merchandise within relevant categories will be advantageous
  • Strong financial background with SAP knowledge as an added advantage

Key Responsibilities

Negotiation

  • Prepare and execute negotiations with a clear understanding of drivers, objectives, and desired outcomes
  • Present factual and compelling arguments to achieve win-win agreements
  • Manage conflict and objections diplomatically while anticipating potential roadblocks

Category Strategy

  • Develop and recommend category-specific growth strategies
  • Evaluate merchandising plans and assess business impact
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance performance, quality, and cost efficiency

Category Performance

  • Maintain strong knowledge of assigned categories, industry trends, and market dynamics
  • Develop and execute buying plans aligned with category growth strategies and overall business objectives

Supplier Relations

  • Build and maintain strong supplier relationships based on performance transparency and accountability
  • Monitor supplier performance using defined metrics and implement corrective action plans where required

Private Brand Strategy and Development

  • Implement and execute Private Brand strategies aligned with category and business growth objectives

Merchandise Knowledge

  • Apply in-depth knowledge of merchandise, promotions, pricing, and sales performance
  • Develop merchandising solutions that drive financial performance
  • Identify and leverage industry trends and market forces to enhance category success
