About the Role
The Specialist Artisan is responsible for ensuring maximum plant uptime through effective maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of control and automation systems. This role plays a key part in maintaining operational efficiency, improving asset performance, and ensuring compliance with production, quality, and cost targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform instrumentation maintenance across process, packaging, palletizing plants, utilities, and facilities
- Monitor daily downtime and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring breakdowns
- Calibrate, repair, and maintain control systems and instrumentation equipment to required standards
- Conduct root cause analysis to resolve equipment performance issues and reduce operational costs
- Maintain and support PLC and SCADA systems, including hardware and software modifications
- Evaluate and improve process control strategies to enhance asset performance
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives for electronic and control systems
- Assist with commissioning of plant modifications and new projects
- Maintain accurate documentation of system changes and perform internal audits
- Conduct fault finding and repair of electronic systems down to component level
- Ensure availability and management of spare parts for control and instrumentation systems
- Report equipment deviations accurately to improve reliability and performance
- Maintain backups of PLC programs and track all system upgrades
- Ensure safe operation of all process control systems
- Conduct audits of control system equipment and ensure compliance
- Resolve daily instrumentation issues and complete detailed root cause investigations
- Perform calibration, testing, and safety checks on all instrumentation equipment
- Execute scheduled and emergency maintenance within required timelines
- Update and review technical documentation and system specifications
- Evaluate and approve alternative system suppliers based on performance
Qualifications and Requirements
- Qualified dual trade artisan with Trade Test Certificates in Instrumentation and Electrical
- Minimum of 3 years’ maintenance experience in a production or FMCG environment
- Computer literacy with knowledge of MS Office and maintenance systems
- Strong expertise in control systems, including PLCs, SCADA, and AC/DC drives
- In-depth knowledge of instrumentation, HAZOP studies, P&IDs, and quality standards
- Experience with industrial communication systems such as RS-232, ASI, DeviceNet, and Ethernet
- Proven experience with operator interfaces and energy control devices including drives, servo drives, thyristors, and soft starters
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work under pressure and deliver results in a fast-paced environment
