About the Role

The Commercial Controller plays a critical leadership role in supporting the Commercial and Advertising & Marketing (A&M) functions. This position focuses on delivering strategic insights, ensuring financial accuracy, enhancing governance, and safeguarding company resources while driving business performance.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Leadership & Control

  • Partner with key stakeholders to provide actionable insights into business operations
  • Ensure visibility and control over commercial and A&M spend
  • Deliver accurate and timely financial reporting across all cycles
  • Identify risks, opportunities, and areas of concern, and communicate effectively to leadership
  • Lead the Commercial Control and A&M agenda to achieve both business and governance objectives
  • Ensure strict adherence to company policies and governance frameworks
  • Drive value-added initiatives through deep-dive reviews and advanced analytics
  • Oversee cost management, financial statement accuracy, and compliance with P&L and Balance Sheet requirements
  • Act as Control Lead for Trading Terms and A&M contract approvals
  • Maintain responsibility for SOX and GCS compliance within the portfolio

Financial Management & Governance

  • Lead the Commercial, A&M, and Selling Control agenda to ensure accurate financial management on monthly, quarterly, and annual cycles
  • Identify and communicate financial risks to senior leadership and functional teams
  • Manage execution and remediation of key control processes across S2C, R2R, and A&M
  • Review and approve Commercial Trading Agreements and Marketing Contracts
  • Conduct operational reviews to assess effectiveness and implement corrective actions
  • Analyze risk exposure and ensure adequate protection against potential losses
  • Support strategic business initiatives such as mergers, acquisitions, system implementations, and go-to-market changes
  • Approve process, system, and policy changes to ensure compliance and efficiency
  • Maintain up-to-date local procedures aligned with business and regulatory requirements
  • Review and approve management accounts, balance sheet reports, and KPI dashboards

Net Revenue Management

  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of Net Revenue in line with company policy
  • Lead accrual reviews with commercial and planning teams
  • Develop and execute financial insights through KPI dashboards and analytics
  • Drive governance forums to improve business performance and processes
  • Manage balance sheet reconciliations and reporting for Net Revenue accounts
  • Oversee forward-looking provisions including pricing adjustments, discounts, and buybacks
  • Ensure compliance with FIFO policy
  • Optimize cash flow performance in line with company targets

Advertising & Marketing (A&M) and Selling

  • Ensure accurate reporting of A&M and Selling expenses in line with policy
  • Oversee marketplace spend governance
  • Provide guidance on accounting treatment, accruals, and expense management
  • Develop insights through analytics and KPI tracking to support decision-making

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Postgraduate degree in Financial Management or related field (CA(SA) preferred)
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in FMCG or a similar industry
  • Strong expertise in financial processes, controls, and governance frameworks
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills
  • Proven project management and leadership capability
  • Strong analytical and financial modelling skills
  • Ability to simplify complex business challenges into clear, actionable frameworks
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams and driving change at a senior level
  • Capability to synthesize multiple inputs into strategic recommendations
  • Demonstrated ability to present complex business cases with confidence and credibility
