Job Overview

The Millwright is responsible for ensuring all plant equipment operates at high levels of reliability through scheduled maintenance and rapid response to breakdowns. The role supports maximum plant availability and contributes to achieving key performance targets including production volumes, quality standards, cost control, and downtime reduction.

Key Responsibilities

Machinery Inspection & Fault Finding

  • Conduct inspections of machinery and equipment in line with OEM standards.
  • Monitor equipment performance to ensure consistent plant availability.
  • Identify root causes of breakdowns, including missed maintenance, component failure, or human error.
  • Apply problem-solving techniques such as 5-Whys and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Troubleshoot and test equipment using both electrical and mechanical expertise.
  • Complete job cards and coordinate parts requisitions with maintenance planning teams.

Preventative Maintenance

  • Perform routine and ad hoc electrical and mechanical testing and maintenance.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in systems such as power supplies, control panels, motors, generators, circuit breakers, and relay panels.
  • Dismantle machinery and replace defective components including gears, brushes, and armatures.
  • Execute preventative maintenance standards across all electrical distribution systems.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all maintenance work completed.
  • Follow engineering drawings, standards, and GMP requirements during all tasks.

Planned Maintenance

  • Ensure all scheduled maintenance activities are completed effectively and on time.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and GMP compliance standards.
  • Complete job cards and parts requisitions promptly to improve repair turnaround times.
  • Refurbish equipment and replace parts to optimize operational performance.

Breakdown Response

  • Attend to electrical and mechanical breakdowns and perform detailed diagnostics.
  • Reassemble and test machinery to ensure proper functionality.
  • Liaise with plant personnel to assess equipment efficiency and performance.
  • Maintain safe working environments, including proper demarcation during major repairs.
  • Comply with food safety, environmental, and safety standards at all times.
  • Update spare parts records and coordinate replacement requests with stores.
  • Install motors, transformers, and electrical components according to technical specifications.

Administration & Reporting

  • Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities.
  • Complete daily shift reports and follow escalation procedures where required.
  • Manage SAP/CMMS backlog to ensure timely closure of maintenance tasks.
  • Report and close out near misses to support workplace safety.
  • Ensure availability of required spares and parts.
  • Perform standby and shift duties in line with operational requirements.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Trade tested Millwright (Mechanical/Electrical).
  • Minimum 3 years post-apprenticeship experience in an FMCG environment or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of automated systems.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse team environment.
