Role Overview – Procurement Director
The Procurement Director is responsible for leading the end-to-end procurement strategy for Ingredients across the South Africa Operating Unit. This role manages a highly complex, multi-category, and high-risk supplier portfolio, ensuring supply security, cost optimization, sustainability alignment, and strong cross-functional collaboration across all sites and joint ventures.
The position oversees strategic sourcing for more than 200 suppliers, over 30 crops, and sourcing activities across 20+ origin countries, including monopoly, government-owned, local, and international suppliers. This leader drives transformation, productivity, and long-term value creation across a significant portion of the total materials spend.

- Botswana sourcing: Sorghum, sugar, and related materials
- Future Life: Ingredients for bars and cereals
Key Responsibilities
Category Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and align category strategies across business units for high-impact ingredient categories
- Directly manage approximately 60% of total ingredients spend while enabling category teams to execute across sites
- Drive long-term supply security, risk mitigation, and cost competitiveness
- Lead transformation initiatives supporting profitability, productivity, and cash flow improvement
Commodity & Market Intelligence
- Monitor commodity movements with a strategic “so what” approach
- Track crop cycles, parity models, arbitrage opportunities, and supply market dynamics
- Support finance in building accurate PFX and AOP assumptions impacting P&L
- Enable weekly and monthly decision-making for procurement and category teams
Risk Management & Supply Security
- Lead dispute resolution and litigation processes to protect organizational interests
- Manage high single-source exposure categories and drive alternate supplier development
- Develop and implement commodity risk management playbooks and buying strategies
- Ensure business continuity planning (BCP) for ingredient supply
Supplier Management & Development
- Oversee supplier selection, negotiations, and performance management
- Conduct quarterly supplier scorecard reviews with stakeholders
- Drive supplier diversity strategy and sustainable sourcing initiatives
- Manage top-to-top strategic supplier relationships to enhance collaboration and performance
- Lead new supplier development while maintaining quality, safety, and sustainability standards
Cost Optimization & Value Creation
- Drive value engineering, shoulder-cost analysis, total cost of ownership (TCO), e-auctions, and supply chain financing models
- Lead productivity initiatives and deliver annual savings targets
- Establish commodity pricing mechanisms and governance structures
- Support cross-functional forums including R&D, finance, and operations to unlock innovation and cost efficiency
Transformation & Strategic Initiatives
- Support growth initiatives including M&A, footprint optimization, divestitures, and path-to-profitability programs
- Ensure supply continuity during transformation projects
- Identify alternates and secure sustainable upstream commodity access
- Act as key procurement leader in strategic business forums and transformation workstreams
Governance & Compliance
- Partner with Legal to secure optimal contract terms and ensure timely contract execution
- Review and approve ingredient RFPs using strategic sourcing levers
- Govern pricing structures and commodity splits to manage risk effectively
- Ensure alignment with regulatory, environmental, and quality standards
- Drive Pep+ objectives across ingredients categories, including scope 2 and 3 commitments
Qualifications & Experience
- 15+ years of strategic sourcing experience in ingredients within a global organization
- Experience managing complex, multi-geographic commodity portfolios (>30 crops, >100 commodities, 20+ countries of origin)
- Minimum 6 years in a senior manager or director role with significant spend accountability
- Proven ability to deliver minimum 5% year-on-year productivity in ingredients
- Strong background in value engineering and large-scale cost optimization initiatives
- Experience in business continuity planning and alternate sourcing strategies
- International sourcing experience preferred
