Introduction
Clicks Group Careers is seeking to appoint a strategic and commercially driven Senior Category Manager (OTC Medicine) to join the Clicks Healthcare team. This role is based at Head Office in Cape Town and reports directly to the Commercial Executive.
Job Purpose
The Senior Category Manager is responsible for driving sustainable revenue growth, margin expansion, and increased market share within the prescription portfolio. This strategic commercial role holds full category P&L accountability and leads supplier strategy, pricing, assortment planning, and promotional execution. The position requires strong financial acumen, in-depth pharmaceutical market knowledge, and the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders to successfully execute category strategies at scale while ensuring regulatory compliance and patient access.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a 3–5 year category strategy aligned to commercial and clinical objectives, including growth, margin optimisation, market share expansion, and patient access
- Own and manage the category P&L by setting financial targets, preparing forecasts, and delivering on gross margin and net contribution objectives
- Lead supplier negotiations, including contracts and commercial terms, to secure competitive supply and sustainable margins
- Manage product assortment and lifecycle, including new product launches, therapeutic mix decisions, rationalisation, and discontinuations
- Design and implement pricing and promotional strategies, manage trade and promotional budgets, and evaluate return on investment
- Collaborate with medical, regulatory, procurement, supply chain, and operations teams to ensure stock availability, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation
- Analyse market, competitor, and claims data to identify growth opportunities, including therapeutic gaps, private label potential, and category extensions
- Monitor and report on category performance to ensure delivery of strategic and financial objectives
Knowledge and Skills Requirements
- Proven experience managing a category P&L and delivering margin and growth targets
- Strong negotiation skills with manufacturers and suppliers, including contract management
- Advanced Excel and financial modelling capability, including forecasting and scenario analysis
- Experience working with claims or market intelligence data such as IMS/IQVIA or similar platforms
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence senior stakeholders
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in category management, product management, or commercial roles within pharmaceutical retail, wholesale, distribution, or manufacturing environments
- Exposure to prescription medication categories is essential and advantageous
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Commerce, Economics, Business, or a related field
- Professional pharmacy qualification or relevant pharmaceutical industry experience is highly advantageous
