Main Purpose of the Role
The Grants Accountant is responsible for managing grant accounting functions and supervising accounting administration staff to ensure full compliance with organisational financial policies, donor requirements, and statutory regulations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Head of Grants and Compliance with annual project budget preparation.
  • Monitor project cash flow requirements and proactively flag shortfalls and risks.
  • Ensure timely submission of monthly donor reports in line with agreed deadlines.
  • Assist with uploading approved budgets onto the accounting system.
  • Review and update financial reports to meet donor and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Review daily payments to ensure accurate capture and proper authorisation on the banking system.
  • Release daily payment batches in line with delegated authority and controls.
  • Monitor and coordinate grants administration to ensure adherence to budgets, policies, and procedures.
  • Work closely with the compliance team to address high-risk areas and audit findings.
  • Recommend and implement corrective actions to address non-compliance.
  • Review sub-recipient contractual compliance in line with donor and organisational requirements.
  • Support Project Managers with proposal development, budget preparation, and work planning.
  • Review monthly expenditure against budgets and implement strategies to optimise burn rates and delivery of outputs.
  • Support preparation of periodic funder reports in line with reporting requirements.
  • Review personnel files to ensure regulatory and contractual compliance.
  • Support finance with balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Review payments to ensure compliance with statutory and donor requirements.
  • Support supplier onboarding and compliance reviews.
  • Perform additional duties as agreed with the line manager.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

Qualifications

  • BCom or BCompt in Financial Management or a relevant tertiary qualification.

Experience and Skills

  • Two to four years’ experience in grants and contracts accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of donor-funded grants and the non-profit sector.
  • Sound understanding of financial accounting policies and procedures.
  • Proven ability to work in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience working with ERP systems.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
