Category Buyer – Pick n Pay Careers

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant university degree preferred
  • 3+ years’ experience in retail Buying and Category Management (experience in butcheries is an advantage)
  • Proven track record of consistent success against financial KPIs
  • Extensive commercial knowledge
  • In-depth understanding of store operations, category management, and in-store execution
  • SAP knowledge is an added advantage

  • Strong knowledge of buying fundamentals and product costings
  • Ability to build recipes and factor costs from raw materials to packaging
  • Analytical skills to identify root causes of issues and recommend solutions to enhance category performance
  • Understanding of commercial levers in food retail

  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills
  • Good presentation skills

Key Responsibilities

Negotiation & Supplier Management

  • Understand negotiating positions, key drivers, and desired outcomes; develop and present factual, compelling arguments to build support and gain commitment
  • Engage in counter-negotiations to reach win-win outcomes while adhering to regulatory and contractual controls
  • Communicate regularly with suppliers to share financial and performance criteria; identify performance gaps and hold suppliers accountable
  • Develop contingency plans to close performance gaps
  • Demonstrate expertise when interacting with suppliers while reinforcing Pick n Pay’s values, strategies, and initiatives

Category Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and recommend business strategies targeting category-specific growth
  • Implement and execute tactical buying plans aligned with category growth strategies and overall business objectives
  • Integrate with Store Operations and Store teams to drive category plan implementation
  • Implement and execute Private Brand category strategies in line with business goals

Analysis & Performance Management

  • Evaluate merchandising plans and assess business impact; recommend modifications based on findings
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance performance, quality, efficiency, and reduce costs
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the assigned category, industry trends, distribution methods, and competitive environment
  • Develop action plans to achieve financial goals using knowledge of market trends and category performance factors

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work cross-functionally with internal teams to ensure alignment with category strategies
  • Share insights, metrics, and recommendations with stakeholders to improve category performance
  • Build strong relationships with suppliers, internal teams, and key stakeholders to drive results
