Main Purpose of the Role

The Human Rights Ambassador is responsible for improving the legal literacy of young women by educating them on their rights to confidentiality, informed consent, and protection against discrimination, violence, and sexual exploitation. This role supports the referral of clients to social grant services, medico-legal post-violence care, and GBV services. The Ambassador also coordinates human rights advocacy and campaigns with civil society, promotes healthy behaviours, and prevents risk behaviours in adolescents through targeted interventions at individual, facility, and community levels, enhancing uptake of HIV testing, linkage and retention in treatment, and access to prevention services such as PrEP and sexual and reproductive health services.

Key Performance Areas

Health Promotion

  • Engage with communities to advocate for rights awareness, gender-transformative approaches, GBV prevention, and stigma reduction.
  • Identify and create platforms for community education on human rights, including community organisations, recreation spaces, learning institutions, and other adolescent gathering points.
  • Educate young women on their legal rights, confidentiality, informed consent, and protection from discrimination, violence, and sexual exploitation.
  • Conduct age-appropriate, adolescent-centred health talks using IEC materials in facilities and community settings.
  • Promote B-wise usage and registration.
  • Educate adolescents on health-related rights and responsibilities, including HTS, AYFS, SRH, and PrEP.
  • Demonstrate practical healthcare practices such as condom use and handwashing.
  • Conduct demand creation for outreach services and address barriers to accessing contraceptives and GBV services.

Linkage to Care for Adolescents and Youth

  • Serve as a contact person and navigator for adolescents accessing legal and healthcare services.
  • Record human rights violations and facilitate access to justice.
  • Improve referrals to social grants, medico-legal post-violence care, and GBV services.
  • Raise awareness of CBO service packages and strengthen referral networks.
  • Promote HIV testing uptake, linkage to care, and follow-up to ensure appointment adherence.
  • Recruit and maintain clients in Youth Care Clubs and support groups.

Retention in Care and Virological Support

  • Create safe spaces for adolescents to discuss social and health-related issues.
  • Support disclosure and adherence, referring cases with poor adherence or unsuppressed viral loads.
  • Recruit HIV-positive adolescents and youth into Youth Care Clubs and adult services.
  • Organise and facilitate Youth Care Club activities.

Health Facility Engagement

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary facility teams to meet programme targets.
  • Participate in clinic Health Committees or forums and represent adolescent voices.
  • Develop adolescent-friendly forums to capture health opinions, concerns, and expectations.
  • Promote adolescent and youth-friendly service provision.

Community Engagement

  • Support and coordinate human rights advocacy and campaigns with civil society.
  • Act as a link between adolescents, clinics, CBOs, and other community health services.
  • Establish or strengthen links with schools and participate in outreach programmes.
  • Represent ANOVA Health Institute at youth gatherings and platforms, advocating for adolescent health and rights.
