Artisan Instrument Mechanician – Sasol Careers

Purpose of the Role
The Artisan Instrument Mechanician is responsible for performing all artisan-level activities related to the maintenance, refurbishment, fault finding, and operational support of instrument mechanical equipment. The role ensures safe, reliable, and compliant plant operation while supporting maintenance excellence and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, refurbishment, and fault-finding activities on instrument mechanical equipment
• Use and maintain the plant maintenance documentation and work management systems
• Apply plant- or mine-specific process knowledge relevant to the discipline
• Comply with Safety Management Systems, including IMS and MBO requirements
• Apply emergency procedures and respond effectively to abnormal situations
• Read, interpret, and implement task risk assessments and hazard identification processes
• Participate in daily morning meetings to align on work assignments and priorities
• Support business objectives by meeting deadlines and maintenance targets
• Provide accurate and timely feedback to supervisors, group leaders, and planners on work progress
• Participate in root cause analyses and risk assessments to improve plant safety and reliability
• Maintain high housekeeping standards and adhere to waste management procedures
• Share technical knowledge with junior artisans and support skills transfer in the workplace
• Participate in performance appraisals and identify personal development needs aligned to the Personal Development Plan
• Lead by example and support team efforts and maintenance tasks
• Assist in developing and improving work instructions to enhance workforce competency
• Contribute to maintenance strategies and continuous improvement initiatives
• Mentor learners and artisans through informal coaching and guidance
• Conduct My IMS inspections to support plant sustainability and compliance
• Participate in PDAs, RCAs, and toolbox talks to enhance plant safety and operational stability
• Ensure accurate maintenance history is captured to support renewals, upgrades, and critical spare replacements
• Act in a group leader capacity when required and aligned with the career path

Minimum Qualifications

• Grade 12 with Mathematics, Science, and English
• NQF Level 4 Mechanical Fitter Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal)

Advantageous Qualifications

• N4 Certificate in Mechanical Engineering

Licensing Requirements

• Valid Driver’s License Code 08
• Driver’s License Code 14 will be advantageous

Experience and Knowledge Requirements

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a qualified instrument mechanical artisan
• Proven SAP experience
• Computer literacy in maintenance and reporting systems
• Sound knowledge of process plant operations
• Pipeline maintenance knowledge will be advantageous
• Working knowledge of Sasol permit and risk systems
