Job Description
We are looking for a skilled Packaging Technologist to support the design, development, and implementation of sustainable, cost-effective, and functional packaging solutions for clothing and non-clothing merchandise. This role ensures compliance with regulations, brand standards, and operational efficiency across the supply chain, from manufacturer to consumer. The Packaging Technologist will oversee packaging development projects from concept to implementation, focusing on technical viability, cost-effectiveness, product protection, consumer experience, and sustainability goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop sustainable packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact and comply with regulatory standards.
• Ensure adherence to local and global packaging regulations, including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
• Lead and support sustainability initiatives, aligning with company environmental goals and targets.
• Research and implement innovative packaging trends, technologies, and materials to propose practical and creative solutions.
• Maintain compliance with company policies, consumer legislation, packaging labelling regulations, and environmental standards.
• Identify cost-reduction opportunities through value engineering and strategic sourcing.
• Maintain and update packaging specifications to meet current standards and continuously improve packaging quality.
• Assist in developing and approving primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging formats to ensure product protection, shelf-life, handling, and merchandising requirements.
• Support packaging development for new product launches, from concept to mass production.
• Guide packaging design decisions based on materials, printing processes, and structural considerations to ensure cost-effective and visually impactful solutions.
• Collaborate with Marketing, Brand, and Design teams to ensure packaging aligns with brand identity, including print quality, colour fidelity, substrate finish, and structural design.
• Review and approve packaging die lines, artwork briefs, and printer proofs for all PEP Private Labels.
• Act as the technical packaging expert in cross-functional teams, collaborating with Buying, Sourcing, Marketing, Supply Chain, and Operations.
• Work with local and global packaging suppliers to evaluate materials, negotiate technical specifications, and ensure quality and reliability.
• Serve as the key liaison between Creative Design teams and Packaging Suppliers/Printers.
• Handle ad hoc tasks, including urgent design revisions, rapid problem-solving, and specialized or one-off projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

• Degree or Diploma in Packaging Technology, Material Science, or related field.
• 3–5 years’ experience in a similar role within a retail environment.
• Strong knowledge of material properties: Plastics (PET, HDPE, PP, PVC, laminates, co-extrusions), Paper & Board (corrugated, folding cartons, virgin vs. recycled), and sustainable alternatives (PLA, PHA, bio-based polymers, certified compostables).
• Comprehensive understanding of packaging conversion and production processes, including manufacturing techniques, filling and sealing technologies, finishing and decoration, and packaging lifecycle and performance.
• Expertise in regulatory compliance and quality systems, including environmental directives and sustainability design.
• Proficiency in technical drawing and design software, specification creation, and commercial analysis.
• Skilled in testing, validation, troubleshooting, and line trial management.
• Experience in cost engineering, value analysis, design for manufacture (DFM), and total cost of ownership (TCO).
• Strong project and stakeholder management capabilities.
• Ability to analyse data, report findings, and problem-solve within a cross-functional environment.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and organisational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
