Job Overview
Truworths Careers is seeking an experienced Payroll Accounting Manager to oversee the end-to-end payroll accounting function within the Employee Benefits Department. This role requires a strong understanding of payroll principles, accounting practices, and compliance, with excellent analytical skills and the ability to operate in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Role Purpose
As Payroll Accounting Manager, you will ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll for South Africa, African countries, and the UK, maintain payroll records, reconcile accounts, and oversee compliance with all payroll-related legislation. You will also manage and develop a team, drive payroll process improvements, and support audits and financial reporting related to payroll and employee benefits.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage payroll processes, including verification of payroll data, GL maintenance, and accurate, timely employee payments across multiple countries
• Ensure compliance with payroll legislation, including employees’ tax, benefits, earnings, and deductions
• Maintain accurate payroll records and prepare reports for management and statutory bodies
• Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies efficiently
• Collaborate with the Employee Benefits Department to ensure accurate employee data and payroll records
• Provide support for internal and external payroll audits
• Develop and implement processes to improve payroll efficiency and accuracy
• Oversee the financial impact of share incentive schemes, including reconciliation of share gains and dividends
• Assist with accounting, budgeting, and forecasting for payroll across RSA and other African countries
• Supervise, mentor, and develop payroll accounting team to ensure high performance
Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience, including:
- At least 3 years in accounting focused on payroll and accounts payable
- Minimum 2 years in a leadership role
• In-depth knowledge of payroll systems, payroll accounting principles, and South African payroll and tax legislation
• Working knowledge of the Employee Tax Incentive (ETI) is advantageous
• Experience with reconciliation and submission of employees’ tax and annual tax certificates
• Proficiency in payroll software (e.g., Oracle) and Microsoft Office, with advanced Excel skills
• Experience preparing detailed payroll reports
